Complete with odds. Everything I post I have in good confidence (from people in positions who claim to know more than I, which is hard, in my opinion), which means nothing. That is my disclaimer.
Les Miles 4:1: Forget frosty relationships with Lloyd (not so true) or contract buyouts (very true), there aren't many coaches on the move this year to combat Miles. Michigan isn't afraid to go outside the family tree for coaches, and isn't hung up on hiring a "big name." Bo, Gary, and Lloyd were none of the sort. I don't think Miles leaves or gets offered the job. Crack open your Evan Williams, LSU fans, and drink up. I think the status quo is staying that way.
Ron English 10:1: People are saying Lloyd won't have any impact on his successor. In other words, htis isn't the JoePa treatment. But, since he's likely to be named associate AD...I'm guessing he has a few words on what happens. This isn't Eastern Europe, where someone else chooses who you marry. English can recruit, but he can't coach a lick. Like Ron Zook with a tan.
Brady Hoke 25:1: No one's talking about this guy, but he IS from the UM tree. And he magically has taken probably the worst program to attempt to revive to a bowl game this year, in all likliehood. This hire would be less asinine than Nebraska giving Turner Gill the job, he of about a 6-16 career record. Carr, Moeller, and Bo all had less experience than this guy. Around UM circles, this name does pop up.
Mike Trvogac 50:1: I've seen this name tossed around. Carolina might make him bring Vinny Testaverde and David Carr with him to UM. As a result, Michigan trades them Chad Henne. So everyone gets screwed. This name is another stupid media thought where some columnist scans every single UM grad as a coach ANYWHERE and decides that maybe they'll mention him.
Kirk Ferentz 150:1: Wow. Another name being mentioned ONLY by media types. Why would UM hire "the next great coach" circa 2002? Have you seen Iowa since then? Ferentz is totally inept. I guess he has a good relationship with the current UM president who was @ Iowa when he was hired. Another media reach. Unless he's sleeping with her, I doubt he gets consideration.
Jeff Tedford 8:1: Ted wants a program that cares more about football than trees. Luckily for him, @ UM we smoke tree instead of saving them. You can argue that Tedford is an underachiever, but you can also argue that it's nearly impossible to recruit @ Cal, with substandard facilities and a bored looking fan base. Carr will want someone that can keep up the academic standards. All Tedford needs to do in an interview is say something nasty about...
Jim Harbaugh 75:1: Too young, took too many potshots @ the program last season. Michigan isn't Stanford. Maybe Jimbo took too many hits from Kevin Greene in the NFL.
Greg Schiano 15:1: If Michigan chooses to go outside the box and away from their norm, this would be a wonderful hire. Still, I can't see UM stealing someone else's head coach...though GS has all the qualifications they'd be looking for.
Some other guy 12:1: The only names I've heard in passing are Miles, Tedford, Hoke, and English. DeBord has come up of late, but again...choosing anyone other than English will have him gone. That could be a good thing, but it could be a bad one too. It was assumed he'd get the job after there was a "gentleman's agreement" of sorts when he came back from the Bears that he'd have the inside track on the job. He'll get an interview. Michigan is unpredictable though. I just hope they make haste before recruits are lost. Carr has not been telling them he'd be around, so for most of the commits I don't think this is much of a surprise.
Who do I want? Bill Belichick sounds pretty good. Is he available?
